Pattachitra Art | Handpainted Odisha Folk Paintings
Pattachitra is one of India's oldest and most revered folk art traditions, originating in the temple town of Puri, Odisha. The name derives from the Sanskrit words patta (cloth) and chitra (picture) — a fitting description for an art form that has adorned temple walls, ritual scrolls, and royal courts for over a thousand years.
Each Pattachitra painting is entirely handcrafted by master artisans from the Chitrakar community, whose lineage traces back generations. The process begins with preparing a canvas of layered cloth coated with a paste of chalk and tamarind seed gum, creating a smooth, leather-like surface. Artisans then draw intricate outlines using a fine brush made from squirrel hair, before filling in vivid colours derived from natural stone pigments, lamp black, and plant extracts. No stencils, no shortcuts — every line is drawn freehand.
The iconography is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology: Lord Jagannath and his divine siblings, the ten avatars of Vishnu (Dashavatar), Krishna's Raasa Leela, and the sacred Tree of Life are among the most beloved themes. Borders of stylised flowers and creepers — a hallmark of authentic Pattachitra — frame each composition with ceremonial precision.
At Culturati, we source directly from certified Chitrakar artisans in Raghurajpur, Odisha's heritage craft village. Every piece in this collection is an original, signed work — not a print, not a reproduction. Whether on Tussar silk, cotton canvas, or traditional palm leaf, each painting carries the soul of a living tradition.
These works make deeply meaningful gifts for housewarmings, festivals, and collectors of Indian art. Ships within 7–9 working days across India and internationally, carefully packaged to preserve the artwork.
