Aranmula Valkannadi | Original Kerala Handheld Metal Mirror
CUL0133
The Aranmula Valkannadi is the original form of this GI-tagged Kerala heritage craft — a round handheld metal mirror with a traditional handle, handcrafted by master artisans in Aranmula village using a secret copper-tin alloy preserved across generations. This is the very first design that established the Aranmula Kannadi tradition, dating back centuries.
The Valkannadi, meaning handheld mirror in Malayalam, was the practical everyday form of this sacred craft. In ancient times, these mirrors were treasured possessions passed down through generations as family heirlooms. The handheld format made it ideal for daily use while retaining its auspicious and spiritually significant qualities.
Unlike glass mirrors, Aranmula Kannadi is front-reflecting: the reflective surface sits on the face of the metal, not behind it. This eliminates the ghost image of conventional mirrors and produces a cleaner, more spiritually pure reflection. Each piece is individually cast, filed, and polished by hand over several weeks — no two are identical.
The warm golden tone of the alloy gives this mirror a quiet, enduring richness. The round mirror is set in an ornate frame with a comfortable handle, making it both functional and decorative — equally at home on a puja shelf, a dressing table, or in a curated heritage collection.
