The Aranmula Valkannadi Drop-Shaped Mirror is one of the rarest forms of this GI-tagged Kerala heritage craft — a front-reflecting metal mirror shaped like a sacred water drop, handcrafted by master artisans in Aranmula village using a secret copper-tin alloy passed down through generations.
The drop or teardrop form carries deep roots in Indian art and spirituality. It echoes the mango leaf — an auspicious symbol in Hindu tradition — the flame of a lamp representing enlightenment, and a drop of divine nectar. This elegant silhouette has graced Indian decorative arts for centuries and is believed to invite prosperity and positive energy into the home.
Unlike glass mirrors, Aranmula Kannadi is a front-reflecting metal mirror: the reflective surface sits on the face of the metal, not behind it. This eliminates the ghost image of conventional mirrors and produces a cleaner, spiritually pure reflection. Each piece is individually cast, filed, and polished by hand — a process that can take weeks — making no two mirrors identical.
