Palm leaf engraving has long been used in Odisha to record stories, manuscripts and religious narratives. In this form of Pattachitra, individual palm leaves are prepared and joined together before the artist painstakingly engraves the composition line by line.
The incised lines are darkened to reveal the remarkably fine detailing, while some works also incorporate hand-applied colour.
Unlike a conventional painting, the folding format allows the artwork to unfold almost like a visual manuscript — revealing different moments of the story across its panels.
