Before the world as we know it, there was a great flood. And before the flood, there was a warning — carried to Manu by a small fish that grew and grew, until it revealed itself as Lord Vishnu in his first incarnation. Matsya, the fish avatar, is the story of divine intervention at the moment of creation itself: life preserved, knowledge protected, the world given a second chance.
This handpainted Madhubani folk art painting tells that story in the visual language of Mithila, Bihar — a tradition where fish are not just subjects but symbols, carrying meanings of fertility, prosperity, and the flow of life. The Matsya is depicted surrounded by motifs like lotus flowers, waves, and geometric designs that layer meaning upon meaning, each element chosen from a vocabulary of symbols passed down through generations of women artists.
